During the recent wildfires in Los Angeles, David Steiner, a retired waste-management tycoon, shared how his $9 million Malibu villa survived the devastating flames, while nearby properties were reduced to rubble. The fires, which destroyed over 20,000 acres and more than 5,000 homes and businesses, were among the worst to hit Los Angeles County. Despite the destruction, Steiner’s mansion remained untouched. He believes the house’s design, which includes fireproof materials, ultra-sturdy construction, and a fireproof roof, played a key role in its survival. Built to withstand earthquakes, the 4,200-square-foot villa is also anchored with pilings that go 50 feet into the bedrock, adding to its stability.
Steiner was initially shocked when he saw a video of smoke and flames near his home, assuming it would be consumed by the fire. However, when he received pictures showing his mansion standing tall amidst the destruction, he realized it had survived. He described the experience as a “miracle,” even as he expressed sympathy for those who lost their homes, especially since his property wasn’t his family’s primary residence. Despite having insurance, he acknowledged that wildfire coverage only covers 50%, and his estate may have suffered some smoke damage. Steiner’s heart went out to those who lost their homes, emphasizing that material goods could be replaced, but memories and family homes could not.
