Household tasks can become quite exhausting, particularly when one is left to tidy up on their own after entertaining a large number of guests. Holly is feeling frustrated due to the increased workload following her in-laws’ Sunday visit. Her husband’s lack of support has led her to seek advice from the internet.
Here is Holly’s letter:
Every Sunday, my husband’s extended family of 9 gathers at our home for a delightful lunch. This tradition began after we relocated to a larger house, which now comfortably accommodates everyone. Once they depart, I find myself burdened with a considerable amount of cleaning, yet they never extend a helping hand.
I mentioned that there is a charge for visiting on Sundays, as nothing comes without a cost in life.
My husband reminded me, “Let’s not forget that it was my parents who assisted us in purchasing this house.” He remarked, “So, this is their place as much as it is ours, and we shouldn’t anticipate them to contribute financially in their own home.”
When I shared my new plan with my mother-in-law, she responded by emphasizing the importance of maintaining a clean and organized home, highlighting it as a responsibility that falls on my shoulders. It’s unrealistic to anticipate guests to contribute to that.
I was taken aback by the contradiction between my husband and his mom. Their responses only fueled my growing anger and frustration, leaving me uncertain about the next steps to take.
Best regards, Holly
