Jay Leno, 73, has submitted an application to become the conservator of his wife’s estate.
Based on court documents, it has been stated that Leno’s wife, Mavis Leno, who is 77 years old, is dealing with dementia.
The former late night television host is interested in establishing an estate plan, as he believes his wife would be capable of handling it independently.
According to court documents filed on January 26 in Los Angeles, it has been noted that Mavis has been experiencing a gradual decline in her mental capacity and ability to navigate time and space for a number of years. As a result, she is no longer able to handle her own estate.
“Jay wishes to establish an estate plan, which includes a revocable trust and will, to ensure that Mavis and Mavis’s brother are provided for. Mavis’s brother is the only other living heir besides Jay,” states the documents.
Within the court documents, doctors refer to Mavis’ diagnosis without explicitly stating the specific type of dementia. They assert that it leads to difficulties with memory, comprehension/processing, and delusional ideation.
According to the documents, Jay has been responsible for managing the couple’s finances for the entire duration of their forty-three-year marriage, and will continue to do so until his passing.
The hearing is scheduled for April 9, and although Mavis is able to attend, she is said to be “unwilling” but “does not want to challenge the establishment of a conservatorship.”
Taking care of a loved one who is living with dementia can be an incredibly challenging responsibility.
