A German family built their own house as a way to spend quality time together. It all started in 2011 when Wolfgang and Heidi, Franziska’s parents, discovered a rundown property. After three years of searching, they finally found a piece of land that had enough room for two tiny dwellings, a garden for Heidi, and Franziska’s grandparents’ house. They were able to purchase the East German farmhouse in the end.
The farmhouse’s exterior was charming, but the interior was in dire need of repair. The family opted to do the renovations themselves in order to save money. They constructed a kitchen for Heidi after removing unnecessary items. A 13-minute video chronicles the entire procedure.
The facade remained mostly same, but the interior was gutted and rebuilt with new beams and insulation. Modernizing the plumbing and electrical wiring was the most challenging aspect.
I was amazed by the outcome! A cozy library, an office nook, and a light-filled living room are now part of the house. The warmth was achieved by utilizing a generous amount of wood, even in the lavatory.
In addition, they insulated the attic and turned it into a bedroom with its own bathroom.
Considering his age, Wolfgang received a lot of appreciation for his efforts. They looked up to the family for the way they collaborated to construct their ideal house.
