Caution: Spoilers ahead for NCIS Season 21 Episode 2 “The Stories We Leave Behind”.
Brian Dietzen from NCIS discusses the small adjustment that had a significant impact on the show’s homage to David McCallum
Last night, NCIS brought us one of its most emotionally charged episodes yet – a heartfelt tribute to the beloved character of Dr. Mallard, played by the legendary David McCallum. It was expected that McCallum’s passing in September 2023 would be acknowledged, but viewers were taken aback by a minor detail that wasn’t the surprise cameo at the end of the episode. Let’s explore further into this memorable episode.
The episode starts with Dr. Jimmy Palmer, played by Brian Dietzen, visiting Dr. Mallard at his home, holding a cup of coffee. Upon arriving, Palmer receives the heartbreaking news that Ducky has peacefully passed away in his sleep.
The show smoothly transitions into the NCIS opening sequence by fading in with a slower rendition of the theme song, a tune that has become familiar and beloved over the past two decades.
Slowing down the opening credits was a thoughtful decision made by the show’s creators to enhance the episode’s tone. During an interview with TV Insider, Brian Dietzen mentioned that they faced challenges transitioning from the cold open to the opening credits, as it didn’t feel quite right. It didn’t seem to fit the tone of this episode.
Being a loyal fan of NCIS, I have to admit that the decision to slow down the intro was a lovely way to start off such an emotionally intense episode. The tribute to David McCallum and his character, Ducky, was flawlessly executed. It moved me to tears and made me think about the influence McCallum had on the show. If you’re on board, I’d be eager to get your input. Let’s celebrate Dr. Mallard’s legacy together.
