Sarah’s father put forth a lot of effort as a single parent to instill in his daughter his strong ideals. Handling money was one of the most valuable lessons he imparted. Sarah talked of how he instilled in her the need of saving money and humility. They had all they needed, but she was taught never to brag about their good fortune.

“I started law school without my dad getting in the way after attending a regular school,” Sarah remarked. He made it quite plain that I had to follow his lead and begin at the bottom and work my way up. Not even to help me study for my entrance exams would he.

His daughter was hired by a tiny legal practice after graduating with honors. Dad was rather pleased with her. He declined her job offer at one of his large corporations and reminded her once more that she had to forge her own path to success.

“My dad was famous, but I never went on TV or radio shows with him,” Sarah added. I never brought up his impeccable reputation or exceptional abilities; they were all his. I understood his view. His intention was for, after his death, my future to depend on me rather than on his money or inheritance.

Though he remained out of their relationship, Sarah’s father harbored misgivings about her partner.

When Sarah began dating Bradd, a fellow college student, her father had doubts about the young man. At their initial meeting, he probed Bradd extensively because he didn’t have enough “personal check.”

“My dad always told me that Bradd was a lazy, spoiled brat who was always interested in my dad’s fame and money,” Sarah recalls. Though I appreciated it, I didn’t give my dad’s concerns about Bradd much attention; I just saw it as him being protective.

Conversely, Sarah was even more certain that Bradd had genuine intentions because he never mentioned money when they were conversing. A year before her father passed away, the pair got married, and both in their personal and professional life, they appeared to be enjoying themselves. Both of them loved what they did and worked hard at it.

Nothing prepared for the way things turned out when Sarah’s father passed away.

Sarah suffered greatly when her father passed away. She was taken aback, nevertheless, by Bradd’s odd behavior at this trying time. “Instead of providing consolation and support during my extreme grief, Bradd immediately brought up my inheritance and inquired about the amount of my anticipated wealth after my father’s death,” Sarah claimed.

She was creating meaningless noise, Bradd reasoned, either as a prank or because she was angry over the burial. “Being not my dad’s biological daughter, I won’t get any of the money,” Sarah shot back. Just one year before my mother passed away, I was adopted. Although my dad raised me as if I were his own, he never intended to leave me anything in his will. That much I have always known.

After learning Sarah had “bad news,” Bradd vanished.

As Sarah continues her account, she claims that one month after learning she would not be receiving any money from her father, Bradd filed for divorce. Sarah arranged for Bradd and a family friend who had previously worked with her dad in business to meet after their divorce.

Bradd was handed Sarah’s father’s will by the dad’s partner after supper. It stipulated that Bradd, should he remain married to Sarah for five years following her father’s death, would receive half of the inheritance. The other half was for Sarah. But only Sarah would be eligible to receive her father’s assets and money in the event of their divorce.

“It was immensely satisfying to witness my ex’s shocked reaction,” Sarah said as she wrapped up her statements. His complexion changed from pale to crimson and back to pale. Like a fish out of water panting for oxygen, he was mute. Knowing that I was thriving without that “lazy, spoiled kid” in my life allowed my dad to at last relax. I thought his strategy had materialized.
