Texas has started construction on a groundbreaking floating border barrier.
Construction crews in Eagle Pass, Texas, have begun the construction of a new floating border barrier near the area. This barrier is set to become a significant part of the region’s history. The primary objective of the new project is to establish a powerful deterrent for individuals who are considering crossing the border illegally in high-traffic areas along the Rio Grande. This is primarily because of the significant number of immigrants who have tragically lost their lives while attempting to cross the river, creating a grave safety concern for individuals seeking to enter the United States.
As per a report by Breitbart News, Lt. Chris Olivarez, a spokesperson for the Texas Department of Public Safety, shared a tweet featuring multiple videos that showcased the commencement of the installation of a set of buoys by construction crews. The buoys are being installed as per the directive of Republican Gov. Greg Abbott, with the funding for the project approved by the Texas Legislature. In addition to the large number of migrants entering the region, Olivarez emphasized that these new barriers will play a crucial role in preventing loss of life among those attempting to cross the treacherous river to reach the United States.
Despite the sweltering heat of a typical Texas summer, migrants remain undeterred in their ongoing attempts to cross from Piedras Negras, Coahuila, Mexico, into the Eagle Pass area.
However, there are individuals who are not pleased with Gov. Abbott’s efforts to address the border crisis that is currently escalating along the state’s boundaries.
According to Steven Mumme, a scholar at the Baker Institute Center for the United States and Mexico who specializes in transboundary environmental and natural resources management along the U.S.-Mexico border, Abbott’s actions are seen as an irresponsible experiment that disregards federal and international law. Mumme expresses concern about the construction of the new buoys.
As reported by the Texas Standard, Mumme expressed concern that the introduction of the floating barriers could potentially disrupt the natural flow of the river, which is against the law. Moreover, he pointed out that these barriers could have implications for the boundary between the United States and Mexico. It is yet to be determined whether Biden or another federal entity will take action against Gov. Abbott and Texas in response to this situation, or if they will choose to remain silent, hoping that the border crisis will resolve itself without the need for intervention from the administration.
