Have you ever thought about what it would be like to live in the woods by yourself and connect with nature? It must be very hard and very relaxing at the same time, especially when we think about how fast-paced, stressful, and sedentary our modern lives are.
A naturalist named Richard Proenneke lived alone in the mountains of Alaska for thirty years. His story has moved many people. This man lived in a wood cabin that he built himself near Twin Lakes. He caught his own food and grew, fished, and gathered it.
He was born in Iowa in 1916 and joined the Navy during WWII.
He spent six months getting better after getting rheumatic fever and began to dream of a simple life, which he finally achieved. In 1950, he got his chance when he went to Alaska and worked as a diesel mechanic, then as a cattle rancher, and finally as a salmon fisherman.
In 1967, he retired and began looking for the perfect place to start a new life. In order to get ready, he went to Iowa. After a year, he came back to Alaska and started working to make his dream come true.He kept records of what he did every day and wrote down useful information about the weather and nature. There is a program called “Alone in the Wilderness” where Richard talks about everything below.
