The David McCallum death stunned NCIS fans. A more beloved character who offered more delight onscreen is hard to imagine. The fact that McCallum was slated to return next season makes it harder.
McCallum was scheduled to reprise his character Donald “Ducky” Mallard in a few episodes of the NCIS oral history to celebrate the show’s 20th anniversary, but he died before season 21 could begin.
NCIS Season 21 Will Address Ducky Mallard’s D3ath.
Many have speculated about how NCIS will handle Ducky’s death and whether past characters will return to honor him. Co-showrunners and executive producers Steven D. Binder and David North revealed the plan.
Binder and North told TV Line that the episode will address Ducky’s death and not use off-screen justifications like retirement or moving. NCIS teammates will discuss the character, which will be emotional.
The show’s co-creators said:
The team mourns Ducky’s death in the episode. Ducky’s meticulousness and compassion allow him to solve one last crime with the team after he leaves.”
The main concern for season 21 is if Ducky’s longtime coworkers would make cameos. Leroy Gibbs (Mark Harmon) and Abbey Sciuto (Pauley Perrette). Neither Binder nor North would comment on these potential returns.
NCIS Showrunners Promise a ‘Special Moment’ for Fans
However, fans have been told to sit for some emotional moments. They teased, “There will also be a very touching and special moment you won’t want to miss,” which will move NCIS fans.
After McCallum’s death in September, Steven D. Binder and David North spoke about him twice. They released a statement complimenting the actor for his kindness to co-stars and his daily attendance on work.
“As much as his fans adored him, those who worked alongside David adored him even more,” they wrote. It was a privilege to work with him from the outset, and he never disappointed.” He was legendary.
We agree and are delighted McCallum will be remembered.
