After Harvey Weinstein ruined their previous “deal,” Goldie Hawn revealed what happened the day she confronted him.
It was almost time for Weinstein’s Miramax to adapt the iconic Broadway musical Chicago for the big screen in the late ’80s. It was originally planned that Hawn would play Velma Kelly and Madonna would play Roxie Hart.
During the production of the picture, Weinstein commissioned a different screenplay that featured a 23-year-old Velma. Twenty years separated Hawn from the other woman.
“Harvey desecrated Madonna and myself,” Hawn stated in a recent interview with Variety. ‘Don’t mess with me,’ I exclaimed. Because your intentions are crystal clear to me. An agreement was achieved.
After the film bombed, Weinstein recast the roles of Roxie and Velma, respectively, with Renée Zellweger and Catherine Zeta-Jones. Best Picture was bestowed upon the picture the next year by the Academy.
Hawn was ecstatic when the now-disgraced media magnate finally paid her the agreed-upon amount for her labor.
She recalled an incident in which she had triumphed over a bully. Afterwards, I informed him, “You know what the best part about you paying me is? Money isn’t the point. You made me believe in right and wrong again.
“This is his karma playing out,” she went on to say.
For sexual assault convictions, Weinstein is serving a lengthy jail term in New York and Los Angeles.
“Acting parts were always chosen based on what was best for the movie, aesthetically and financially,” he told the publication from behind bars.
It makes me happy to hear that Goldie had a good time and is strong enough to say it in these climate. We thought we gave it our all on Chicago, and I’m proud of it. All I can say is, “Thank you.”
