The thought of losing a cherished father or grandfather can be quite daunting, and for many individuals, navigating such circumstances can be incredibly challenging. However, it was disheartening for one individual to witness that once his children became aware of his illness, their focus shifted towards squabbling over their future inheritance instead of expressing sympathy. The father chose to share his story on Reddit, where he found the much-needed support from fellow users.
A person shared their personal encounter.
I’m in my sixties. Thanks to taking advantage of the right economic circumstances, I managed to save up enough money, enjoy a worry-free retirement, and leave a substantial inheritance for my children. But their recent actions have deeply saddened me.

My eldest daughter is a lawyer, just like her spouse. My third son pursued a career in engineering, while my youngest son found his calling in sales. As for my other son, he followed the path of law.
I have received a diagnosis of cancer, and it seems that my time may be limited. My children have resorted to some rather extreme measures in their quest to secure their inheritance at an earlier date. In the beginning, there were numerous verbal exchanges that escalated into legal battles.
It was truly infuriating when, during my time in the hospital receiving treatment, my daughter resorted to deceitful means to acquire her brothers’ portion of the inheritance. Now, the siblings can only communicate through legal representatives and are unable to make direct eye contact.
I made the decision to spend the money, even though I was feeling down about the situation. I reasoned that if the money was no longer there, it might diminish their motivation to continue the fight. I generously contributed to various causes, pampered my wife with luxurious beauty products, treated ourselves to memorable vacations, showered my grandkids with extravagant gifts, and upgraded the equipment of my dear friends and colleagues to enhance their work performance. As part of our preparations, we made arrangements for my funeral in advance and also invested in a spacious television.
A significant portion of my savings has already been used up. I would like to ensure that my wife is provided for financially and has enough resources to support herself for the foreseeable future.
However, my children have started to become aware of my spending habits and are starting to inquire about it. My daughter figured out what had happened on her own. I was at a loss for words as I realized the truth behind her accusations. The weight of my actions became even heavier when she pointed out the potential harm they could cause to her children and future generations.
It made me reflect on whether I had been too focused on myself to realize that my grandchildren shouldn’t be held accountable for their parents’ mistakes. Now that’s my dilemma.
